CHRIS TUITE
Director, Forest Carbon Markets

Education:

University of Liverpool: B.A., Zoology
University of Bristol: Ph.D., Zoology

Chris joined CI’s Forest Carbon Markets team in 2008. His work focuses on linking major corporations with the evolving market for forest-based carbon offsets that support the conservation of biodiversity-rich forests while at the same time promoting economic opportunity for communities and indigenous people who are dependent on forest resources. The program identifies forest carbon investors and assists CI’s field programs in designing forest conservation and restoration projects that provide verified carbon credits.

Chris was born in Kenya and educated in the UK. His Ph.D. research was on the ecology and conservation of flamingos and soda lakes in the Eastern Rift Valley in Africa. He also studied business, finance and economics at the Arizona State University and qualified as a CPA. Chris has spent twenty years working for NGO’s in various finance, executive program management, and consulting roles. Chris directed the Wildlife and Habitat Program for the International Fund for Animal Welfare after serving as their CFO. And prior to this, spent ten years with The Nature Conservancy as Controller and Chief Business Analyst.

He has experience with both applied on-the-ground conservation and development projects around the world and in international environmental advocacy, including campaigns on whaling and the international wildlife trade. Chris has developed a strong interest in the integration of conservation and development for a sustainable future, particularly in Africa, and the inter-relationship between environment, governance, peace, security, international politics and poverty. From 2005 to 2008, Chris directed the US office of the Green Belt Movement, the environment, democracy, and human rights organization founded by Kenyan Nobel Peace Laureate, Wangari Maathai. Chris assisted the Green Belt Movement to build the capacity to develop carbon offset projects to support tree-planting and forest protection in Kenya.
