The Forests Dialogue

Meeting a critical need
Scientific understanding and public concern are mounting over the biodiversity impacts of global forest destruction. Reconciling society's increasing need for wood fiber with the equally important need to conserve the remaining forests presents a considerable challenge that must be addressed by those working in both conservation and the forest industry.

Opportunity
By participating in The Forests Dialogue, a forum that brings together experts on forestry issues from around the world, we are working to ensure global forest conservation while meeting business and consumer needs in wood fiber production. With the secretariat at Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, The Forests Dialogue provides a platform for leading forest products companies to work with the conservation community to adopt and implement biodiversity commitments and address key issues of international concern.

Progress
Contributed to international agenda for action: As a member of the steering committee of The Forests Dialogue, CI has helped shape an agenda that examines how forest certification, illegal logging, conservation priority-setting and the development of intensive fiber plantations affect biodiversity conservation.

Co-sponsoring biodiversity sub-dialogue: Together with Weyerhaeuser, CI is spearheading a sub-dialogue within The Forests Dialogue to identify and implement "Keys to Successful Biodiversity Conservation Outcomes in the World's Forested Regions."
